About Me

As you get to know me you will notice a couple of things I am passionate about big horses and big dogs.  The traditional working farm horse who used to be called “Dobbin”.  I have been around horses all my life and over the years I have owned quite a few, now about to start a new life I have reduced my numbers down to two Shires who when I get settled will be joining me.  At the moment Westie is a

new Mum with a young and not so small son “Michael”.  He was named after a very special boy that I just lost. It all started in 1989 when I purchased my very first Shire a Mare called “Fennswood Lady Audrey”.  See photo she was 24 and loved her foster kids. Even through she had had six other foals, I was no matter what I tried never able to get another foal from her.  My stud prefix is glenmeadowshires which is registered

with the English Shire Horse Society, this name refers to the classic image of an English Meadow in a Glen, and reminds me of a farm I went to every day where the farmer actually worked his horses in the fields.
I am one of many who are  fighting to preserve these magnificent horses that are still officially listed at risk with the endangered species register.

The future direction of “Glenmeadow Shire Horse Stud” is to share this love affair with these Gentle Giants with others.  Our stable will consist of Shires and Clydesdales primarily concentrating on breeding the traditional working type of Shire and Clydesdale. This will be the cornerstone of the stud, it will be open to kids and adults of all ages, some focus will be on providing a place to come for the those who have limited abilities or means.  There will be a variety of educational programs that will encourage interaction on a day to day basis with my “Big Kids” at every level from working with the babies to riding and learning how to work and train them for work.  To give back to the community the joy they have given me over the years.

To see the looks on people’s faces when they meet my “Big Kids” is  priceless!  Other areas are also in the planning stages which will only enhance the overall appeal of coming to visit the “Glenmeadow Shire Horse Centre”.A place to bring the family for the day to see how things used to be when they worked the land and the streets.  Activities will include learning to harness and work with my big kids, a great opportunity for  school groups and other organisations.  By promoting and actively using these beautiful horses will help in bringing them to the attention of a bigger audience,  I found most people when they came into contact with my “Big Kids” usually would ask could we have a photograph please.  When I can work it out I will post this beautiful one a friend took of Michael and Matthew on duty which I hope you like.  Tall, gentle but very strong and in Michael’s case sometimes half asleep they would still manage to stir up emotions of the days when the horse was not only a means of transport but a valuable and powerful tool for working the land.
